Lesson 10 - Mixing and Painting the Complementary Colors, Yellow-Green and Red-Purple
You continue mixing complementary color mixes with yellow-green and red-purple in this lesson. I will walk you through the steps of mixing the two desaturated yellow-greens and two desaturated red-purples. You will mix and place each of the four mixes onto your template, moving across the color wheel. By the end of this lesson, as shown below, your color wheel will have more colors across the interior of the color wheel, from yellow-green to red-purple.
There are four (4) video parts to this lesson. At the end of the lesson, click on the “Complete and Continue” button at the top right corner or the bottom of the lesson page. Doing so will help the system remember what you have completed and what you have not.

Part 1: Lesson Introduction, Mixing Yellow-Green, and Red-Purple
In part 1, you mix the yellow-green and the red-purple and compare them to those painted previously on the color wheel template.
Part 2: Mixing the Yellow-Green and Red-Purple Complementary Mixes
In part 2, you will mix the yellow-green complementary mixes by adding the red-purple into the yellow-green, making the two desaturated yellow-greens for the color wheel template. You will then mix the red-purple complementary mixes by adding the yellow-green to the red-purple, making the two desaturated red-purples for the color wheel template.
Part 3: Adjusting the Yellow-Green Brown and Adding Oil to the Mixes
In part 3, you will adjust the yellow-green-brown complementary mix more towards the red-purple side of the color wheel. And then, add linseed oil to the yellow-green and the red-purple complementary color string mixes.
Part 4: Painting the Complementary Mixes onto the Color Wheel
In part 4, you will finish this lesson by painting the yellow-green and the red-purple complementary color string mix onto the color wheel template.

Please share your progress and comments with the studio artist community in the comments below! What did you learn, enjoy, or find frustrating in this lesson?
I suggest the following to have a better experience in the studio community.
- Please double-check to ensure the “Receive instructional and promotional emails from RL Caldwell Studio.” is turned on in your student account under the “Edit Profile” section. If this is not turned on, I can not communicate with you about class updates. If you don’t want me to send you any promotional emails, I don’t send many; email me with your request, and I’ll make sure to remove your email from my promotional email list.
- While you are in the “Edit Profile” section, turn on the “ Email me when someone responds to my comments” and “Email me when someone comments on a discussion I've commented on.” By doing this, you will have a more robust experience with other Artists in the community.
- Also, let the other artists know who you are by adding a profile image to your account let other artists know who you are. Teachable uses Gravatar, and creating an account to set up your profile image is very easy.
I look forward to seeing your progress, and I’ll see you in the next lesson of the course!
-Robert
