Like the value scale you mixed on the color wheel, you will “sneak up” on the tints and shades of Cadmium Yellow Medium. Part 1: Lesson Introduction and Starting to Mix Cadmium Yellow Medium’s Tints & Shades

In part 1, I will quickly introduce the lesson. You will start the Cadmium Yellow Medium value string by placing Cadmium Yellow Medium in its inherent value position on the value scale, value 8. You will also place white, value 10, and black, value 1, to their positions on the value scale. Next, you will start to mix the tint of Cadmium Yellow Medium by mixing white into Cadmium Yellow Medium, making value 9. Since Cadmium Yellow Medium’s inherent value is an 8, there is only one tint to mix for Cadmium Yellow Medium. Then you will start to mix the shades of Cadmium Yellow Medium, values 7, 2, 3, and 6, by adding black to Cadmium Yellow Medium.

Part 2: Continuing to Mix and Adjust Cadmium Yellow Medium’s Shades and Add Oil

In part 2, you will finish mixing Cadmium Yellow Medium’s shades by mixing values 5 and 4. Then you will adjust values 3, 4, and 5 so that the value string makes an equal visual step between the values. Before moving on to the next part of this lesson, you will clean your palette and mix oil into Cadmium Yellow Medium’s value string.

Part 3: Painting Cadmium Yellow Medium Values 10-6 onto the Template

In part 3, you will paint Cadmium Yellow Medium’s value string onto the Primaries Inherent Value Scale Template, starting with values 10, 9, 8, 7, and 6.

Part 4: Painting Cadmium Yellow Medium 5-1 onto the Template

In part 4, you will finish this lesson by painting Cadmium Yellow Medium’s value string onto the Primaries Inherent Value Scale Template, starting with values 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1.

I suggest the following to have a better experience in the studio community.

  • Please double-check to ensure the “Receive instructional and promotional emails from RL Caldwell Studio.” is turned on in your student account under the “Edit Profile” section. If this is not turned on, I can not communicate with you about class updates. If you don’t want me to send you any promotional emails, I don’t send many; email me with your request, and I’ll make sure to remove your email from my promotional email list.
  • While you are in the “Edit Profile” section, turn on the “ Email me when someone responds to my comments” and “Email me when someone comments on a discussion I've commented on.” By doing this, you will have a more robust experience with other Artists in the community.
  • Also, let the other artists know who you are by adding a profile image to your account let other artists know who you are. Teachable uses Gravatar, and creating an account to set up your profile image is very easy.

I look forward to seeing your progress, and I’ll see you in the next lesson of the course!

-Robert
